| On 29 July 2008, 10-year-old Ahmad Moussa [pictured in the left] was killed when Israeli Border Police shot him in the head with live ammunition, as he took part in a non-violent demonstration against the Wall in Ni’lin. Read the full story: Two boys killed in Ni'lin following violent Israeli repression On 25 May 2010, the Israeli central district prosecution filed an indictment for negligent manslaughter against the border police officer who shot 10-year-old Ahmad. The officer claimed he fired some warning shots to scare off the demonstrators. DCI-Palestine welcomes the indictment and hopes this investigation ensures accountability. However, there is ongoing impunity for similar cases. A notable number of child injuries and fatalities have occurred during demonstrations against the Wall. Israeli Border Police, who typically guard the areas along the Wall, often fire rubber-coated steel bullets at close range and sometimes live ammunition, as well as tear gas canisters and sound bombs at demonstrators, placing children at significant risk of injury. The day after Ahmad was killed, 17-year-old Youssef was shot twice in the head with rubber-coated steel bullets at close range during confrontations with Israeli Border Police that began after Ahmad’s burial in Ni’lin. Youssef died as a result of his injuries several days later. Furthermore, from August 2008 to May 2010, DCI-Palestine has documented five more cases of child fatalities as a result of the use of disproportionate force by Israeli soldiers. DCI-Palestine calls on Israel to fully investigate these incidents involving disproportionate use of deadly force against Palestinian demonstrators, including children, and take appropriate action against those responsible, in accordance with their legal obligations under international law. DCI-Palestine also calls on Israel to ensure that its army respects its international legal obligations and the lives of Palestinian children. |
